- Definition of key concepts: government/ governance, political system, regime.
- Classical typologies of governance (Aristoteles, Bodin, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu); typology of regimes between the two world wars: democratic and totalitarian; after the WWII the division on three worlds: capitalist (liberal-democratic), communist (one-party) and »Third world« (authoritarian); regimes of contemporary world: Western poliarchies, new democracies, Eastern Asian regimes, Islamic regimes, military regimes.
- Democracy, totalitarianism, authoritarianism:
- Party system – basic principles of modern regimes (M. Weber, E. Weil, R. Aron, N. Bobbio, N. Luhmann);
- Paradigm of totalitarism (R. Aron, C. Friedrich, F. Neumann, K. Popper, H. Arendt, J. Derrida);
- Modern classifications of undemocratic (autocratic) regimes (H. Kelsen, H. Arendt, B. de Jouvenel, A. Stepan, J. Linz)
- Case study: Yugoslav socialism between totalitarianism and democracy.
