Greek History

The course offers an overview of Greek history from its beginnings to the end of the Hellenistic period. An introductory presentation of the development of research on Ancient Greece, study aids and primary sources for Greek history is followed by four periods of Greek history: (1) Pre-Homeric Greece, (2) the Archaic period, (3) the Classical period, and (4) the Hellenistic period. The final part of the course relates to the elements of Greek presence in present-day Slovenian territory and the surrounding regions (mythology, geographical descriptions, toponymy, and material remains). Particular emphasis is placed on selected topics, notably the social and political system of Ancient Sparta and Ancient Athens, with special attention to the question of Athenian democracy; Greek influence on the peoples of the Mediterranean and the European hinterland. In the presentation of the Classical period and the decline of the Greek world in the Hellenistic period, the similarities and differences between the Greek world and the parallel or later development of the Roman state are examined. The selected sources are available in Slovenian and, in most cases, also in other major European and world languages.
