The course consists of selected chapters. The discussed themes change from one year to another. Lectures are connected to the seminar.
The beginnings and history of the science. Systemization, institutions, and work tools. The system of abbreviations on Roman inscriptions, transcription signs in inscription publications, corpuses. Languages of the ancient world. Writings. Palaeography. Onomastics – Roman and ethnic names. Name formulas (citizens, peregrine, freedman, slaves). Prosopography. Careers of senators and equestrians (cursus honorum) in civil and military sphere. Imperial nomenclature. Organization of the Roman army, administrative apparatus of Roman provinces, municipal administration, organization of customs.
Individual inscription categories: votive, honorary, funerary, imperial inscriptions, milestones, military diplomas, inscriptions on items of everyday use – instrumentum. Dating and commenting inscriptions.
