The course represents the survey of the historical development of the novel from its beginnings in the antiquity. The course explains the main antique (Daphnis and Chloe, Aethiopica, Chariton's Kallirhoe, Satyricon, Metamorphoses) and medieval novels (such as Chrétien de Troyes's romances and The Roman de Tristan et Iseult), the Rennaisance (Gargantua and Pantagruel, Don Quixote), Baroque and Classicist novels (The Princess of Cleves / La Princesse de Cleves), Simplicius Simplicissimus), novels of the periods of the Enlightment (Robinson Crusoe, Jacques the Fatalist / Jacques le Fataliste, Candide), Pre-romanticism (The Sorrows of young Werther / Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship / Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre), Romanticism ((Waverley, The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr/ Die Lebensansichten des Katers Murr), Realism and Naturalism (The Red and the Black / Le Rouge et le Noir, Madame Bovary, Crime and Punishment / Prestupleniye i nakazaniye, War and Peace / Voyna i mir), Modernism (Ulixes, In search of Lost Time / A la recherche du Temps perdu, The Castle / Das Schloss, The Waves) and Existentialism (The Plague / La Peste, Nausea / La Nausée); nouveau roman (Triptih, Le Voyeur), novels of magical realism (One Hundred Years of Solitude / Cien anos de soledad, Hopscotch / Rayuela), Post-modernist novels (The Name of the Rose / Il Nome de la Rosa, The French Lieutenant's Woman), and post-colonial novels (Anthills of the Savannah, The Interpreters, Midnight's Children, The Hungry Tide, So Long a Letter).
