Genre definition of the novel and its role in the development of national literature; its relationship to social reality.
Overview of developmental stages in connection with the specifics of the Polish literary process and its role in the search for new artistic expression from the formation of Young Poland on. The opposition to the traditional type of (Western European) novel (S. I. Witkiewicz), modern search in relation to the status of the subject in modern prose and relationship to reality (B. Schulz, W. Gombrowicz, Z. Nałkowska, M. Choromański).
Post-war development of the novel in the homeland and in exile, modern Polish novel, and its structure innovations. Question of the borderline cases of modernism and enforcement of postmodernist procedures in the last twenty years of the 20th century. Motifs, thematic and compositional dimension of the modern novel.
