The course deals with a contemporary dynamics of the processes of creating both global and local music cultures. It starts from a theoretical premise, which is based in the need to address popular music contextually and to analyze the changing relationship between artificial, folk and popular music.
The course deals with a historical framework of creating the popular music culture and addresses it as cultural goods at the capitalist market. It also addresses the crucial role of the youth mass market after the second world war in its creation and segmentation.
Topics: criticism of cultural industry and fetish-isation of music life, conflict relationships in world and Slovenian music industry, the role of technology in creating and consuming music, media transmission of music, the role of genres’ categories in social organization of listening, transmission and creation of music, the role of popular music among subordinate social groups, social acceptance of the ways of listening to and using of music, the role of music in film as a tool for time/space, world music and global music culture.
The theoretical basis of the course are contemporary sociological analysis of music and popular music, the anthropology of music and ethnomusicology, the semiology of music, cultural studies and the theory of audio-visual in the context of film and television.
Theoretical addressing of popular music are accompanied with concrete examples through which social is being (re)produced in the field of music.
