Antiquity in the modern age culture

The course provides an illustrative overview of the reception of classical antiquity in literature and culture from the Renaissance to the modern times:
1) modern perceptions of Greece and Rome;
a) Renaissance, Enlightenment, Winckelmann, Romanticism, b) Athenian democracy as a paradigm, c) Olympic games and ideologies of sport, č) Rome and the ideology of Empire, d) Rome and Christianity (e. g. Virgil's Christian readers), e) tradition of European humanism and its relationship to classical antiquity;

2) literature, theatre, art and film;
- culture of Latin humanism,
- re-discovery of classical antiquity in the Renaissance (key themes: Renaissance poetics; Florentine Neoplatonism; Arcadism; image of classical antiquity in Renaissance art),
- classical antiquity in French classicist theatre;
- ... during the Enlightenment;
- ... in European Romanticism and in French Symbolism,
- ... in literature, theatre and film of the 20th century (reception of a selected myth -- e.g. Medea, Oedipus; reception of selected literary texts),
- image of classical antiquity in Hollywood spectacles and in popular culture.
