The subject covers the most important authors of the French Enlightenment and Preromanticism (Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau). The presentation is structured around some basic topics: literature of the 18th century in the context of the philosophy of the Enlightenment; the social (political) engagement of the main 18th century writers; the development of the French theatre in the 18th century; the rise of the novel; changes in reading culture; French poetry in the 18th century; literary representations of historical events and of everyday life (the great memorialists).
