An overview of the development of the English language and the division into Old, Middle, and Modern English. The history of English phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and semantics. The Old English phonemic system and its simplification in Middle English. The Great Vowel Shift and other sound changes in Middle English and Modern English. The nominal paradigm: the origin and history of plural and case endings in nouns, pronouns, adjectives and determiners. The verbal paradigm: the origin and history of finite and non-finite forms, irregular, modal and auxiliary verbs. The origin and history of tense, mood and voice.
