Lecturer(s): doc. dr. Currie Oliver, prof. dr. Vrbinc Marjeta
The course qualifies students for suitable and reliable translation of general non-literary texts into English. Students become acquainted with the use of general mono- and bilingual dictionaries and other lexicographic tools necessary for translation. They gradually become familiar with the basic terminology from the field of translation studies, which enables them to perceive the translation problems, understand source and target texts within the framework of the source or target culture and have the ability of self-reflection of their own translation processes. During lessons, students present translations of different texts they have done at home, compare them (regarding the pragmatic framework, discourse characteristics, lexical nuances, stylistic level) and check their suitability, discuss various solutions and sources for these solutions (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, the Internet, parallel texts). Since the emphasis is on the translation from the mother tongue into English as a foreign language, they also deal with topics related to the Slovene-English contrastive analysis, particularly at the levels of syntax and text.
