Media and Cultural Studies

Students are first acquainted with the theoretical context in which cultural stdies emerged (theory of hegemony, semiology, ethnography of cultural practices). This is the foundation for critical understanding of the problematics of cultural studies as well as for elaboration of concepts needed to study contemporary mediated cultural practices. Students get to know the Birmingham tradtion (S, Hall, D. Morley, A. Gray, A. McRobbie) as well as later trasformation and critique of early concepts and problematics, developed in varipous disciplines and through differnt approaches: sociology og culture, cultural studies, (especially new) media studies, philosophy, postcolonial studies etc.
