Slovene Novel in Context

The course begins by surveying various theories of the novel, systemising them and presenting them critically and analytically, which provides a theoretical basis for understanding the novel as an independent literary genre. After outlining the history and content of the concept of the 'novel', it moves on to the distinctive features of the Slovene novel, its beginnings, its 'blockade' and its developmental metamorphoses through the 20th century down to modernism, postmodernism and the novelistic prose after postmodernism. Foregrounded are the most clear-cut and aesthetically penetrating texts by Slovene novelists: their themes, poetics, ideas, and aspects of cultural history and philosophy are interpreted and brought in connection with the present, while the Slovene novelistic production is placed in the context of the European – and global – novel.
