Gregor Pompe was born in 1974 in Ljubljana. After completing the Bežigrad Grammar School, he studied at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana: first comparative literature (A) and German language (B), and then also musicology (A). On 4 September 2000, he graduated in musicology and German language with literature (education orientation). For his graduation thesis, entitled Rational Serial Organisation and Chance – The Sameness of the Different, he received the Student Prešeren Prize of the Faculty of Arts. Throughout his studies, he received a state scholarship for gifted students (Zois Scholarship), and he was later also a recipient of a scholarship of the Municipality of Ljubljana. 

On 6 December 2000, the Senate of the Ljubljana Faculty of Arts elected Gregor Pompe to the position of assistant, and on 7 December 2000 he was employed as an assistant at the Department of Musicology in Ljubljana. He defended his masters thesis in the same department on 3 September 2002, with a Masters thesis entitled The Symphonic Works of Lojze Lebič (mentor Prof. Dr Matjaž Barbo), and on 1 October 2002 became a full assistant. On 8 June 2006, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled The Expressiveness of the Musical Flow and Postmodernism (mentor Prof. Dr Matjaž Barbo), and on 14 April 2007 he was again elected by the Senate of the Faculty of Arts to the position of assistant. In the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 academic years, he lectured part time in the history of music at the Department of Music, Faculty of Education, University of Maribor, and in the winter semester of the 2007/2008 academic year, he led a seminar at the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Graz (Austria). On 14 April 2008, he was elected to the position of assistant professor and, since the 2008/2009 academic year, he has lectured as an assistant professor at the Department of Musicology. Since 2012, he has been the head of the same department. 

Gregor Pompe commenced his activities as a music writer while studying, and his texts (articles, appraisals, critiques, reviews, interviews) have appeared in numerous publications, including Dialogi, Nova revija, Muzikološki bilten, Delo, Ampak, Literatura and Rast Emzin. He has translated a number of philosophical essays (Nova revija, Literatura, Filozofija na maturi), he occasionally collaborates with the Ars radio station of Radio Slovenia (interviews, independent programmes, critiques), he writes concert programmes (Slovenicum Chamber Ensemble, Narodni dom Maribor, Maribor Festival, Slovene National Theatre Maribor and Ljubljana, Cankarjev dom), and since 2002 he has been a regular music critic for the newspaper Dnevnik.

He has been appointed on several occasions to expert commissions on the state level (2005–2009, member of the expert commission for the promotion of international cooperation at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia; since 2012, member of the expert commission for music at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia), and on the municipal level (since 2012, president of the expert commission for music and the expert commission for support projects at the Municipality of Ljubljana; 2011, member of the expert commission for conferring the Župančič Award at the Municipality of Ljubljana). 

From 2000 to 2004, Gregor Pompe was the president of the Muzina Society, a society for the encouragement and advancement of new music, with whom he organised two international festivals of contemporary music (Muzifest), and from 2000 to 2012 he was a member of the executive committee of the Slovenian Musicological Society (from 2005 to 2008, he was the editor of the society’s journal Muzikološki bilten, and from 2008 to 2012 he was the president of the society). He is also active as a composer, and his works have been performed at numerous concerts (Jeunesses Musicales, Cankarjev dom, Muzifest Festival, Kunigunda Festival, Night of Young Slovenian Composers, Musical July on the Coast, and various competitions). In 2007, his composition Ekscitacije for large orchestra represented Slovenia at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. 

As a musicologist and scholar, Gregor Pompe’s primary research interests are contemporary Slovenian and European music, the semantics of music, contemporary compositional techniques, and the history of opera and music theatre. In collaboration with Dr Juri Snoj, he prepared an exhibition and monograph entitled The Written Form of Music in the Slovenian Lands for the World Music Days in Ljubljana. He has received two awards for his work in education: the Award of the Student Council of the Faculty of Arts for outstanding work in education, and the Award of the Faculty of Arts for outstanding achievements in education. He is the founder and conductor of the Filozofska filharmonija, the symphony orchestra of the Faculty of Arts.
