The course deals with the following issues in the fields of phonetics and phonology:
- the subject matter of phonetics and phonology, relation to other sciences
- acoustic and perceptual phonetics (sound creation and propagation, speech acoustics, sound perception)
- articulatory phonetics (speech organs, place and manner of articulation of consonants and vowels)
- phonetic transcription (IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet)
- a detailed description of sounds of Slovene language (phonemes and allophonic variations, stress, alternations)
- phoneme, allophone, lexical representation (definition and method of determination)
- formalization of phonetic and phonological features
- overview of alternations, processes and phonological rules
- phonological analysis of various languages (determining alternations and formal representation of phonological rules describing them)
- basics of metrical phonology and Optimality Theory
- prosodic features (duration, amplitude, tone)
